Hey, remember 2011-2016 where there was a deluge of YA film adaptions that we all collectively just. Don't talk about anymore? Yeah, let's take a trip down memory lane! This is going to be written like a bad Tumblr post because I feel like that's the only way I can get my true feelings across.
**Note, these are my own opinions, and I'm not saying anything bad against YA film adaptions in general.**
**EDIT: I have been reminded of some more movies, so I've added them.**
**EDIT: I have been reminded of some more movies, so I've added them.**
I Am Number Four (2011)
- okay this movie came on TV the other day and I realized that I genuinely, hand to heart, did not remember it even existing
- and I saw it in theaters okay
- now I'm looking through the cast and just . . . how was this even a thing
- Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Jake Abel??
- how
- this movie was the primary source of all those 2013 gifs of Emma Carstairs as soon as TDA was announced asl;dkfj;alks
- "ROLLING IN THE DEEP" BY ADELE WAS IN THE SOUNDTRACK WHYYYYYY
- Alex Pettyfer again??
- WAIT VANESSA HUDGENS, MARY-KATE OLSON, AND NEIL PATRICK HARRIS??
- apparently I forgot this movie existed as well
- I remember the plot but like. none of the cast past Alex Pettyfer who for some reason was all the rage during these years
- remember how everyone wanted him to play Jace in TMI (more on that movie later)
- I still don't remember Vanessa Hudgens in this movie
- I remember all of the trailers being so dramatic
- then the movie was so bad I couldn't even watch all of it
- literally
- I just got up halfway through the movie and did something else
- I genuinely don't even remember anything from it except the guy (who played Han Solo in Solo) had a really high-pitched voice
- okay but Emmy Rossum was good though
- this just made me remember that I watched Ginger & Rosa bc the girl who played Lena was in it and that was such a mistake
- I don't remember much of this movie but I do remember the cast because a lot of people I followed on Tumblr were shook by it
- and looking at them now,,,
- I still am tbh
- I mean?? Saoirse Ronan, Max Irons, and Jake Abel?? some good stuff
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013)
- DON'T @ ME I was going to put this on the list and then just totally blanked!!
- we all know that the first one was bad okay so I'll just skip that one
- BUT no one talks about sea of monsters?? why not??
- you know, considering they had to have thought this movie wouldn't do weel
- they got a decent cast
- (although they had to replace some ppl, like Pierce Brosnan as Chiron)
- (which now I'm remembering Pierce Brosnan as Chiron and now I'm horrified)
- I mean
- Stanley Tucci?? Nathan Fillion??
- OCTAVIA SPENCER AND CRAIG ROBINSON AS THE VOICE OF THE SNAKES OH MY GOD
- remember how everyone was # shook abt Thalia's casting and then she was in .5 seconds of the movie
- OR how they pronounced her name "Talia" and not "Thalia" (I was the second one)
- sorry I'm still thinking of Pierce Brosnan as Chiron, maybe I should write a section for the first book
- what about how everyone complained that Annabeth wasn't blonde so they gave her blonde highlights in this movie
- "don't walk on my roof" ahhhhhhhhhh
- everything about this movie was so cringey but in a good way where you could laugh
- I mean
- Demi Lovato power ballad suddenly blasting during the greenhouse kiss
- they never say Isabelle's name
- I'm pretty sure the graphics were so bad but I can't even remember
- also the dialogue
- unpopular opinion tho: I liked the movie cast more than the show cast
- they had way more chemistry together okay!!
- also I knew so much about the movie cast like my sister played me a song the other day and I remembered primarily because the guy who played Alec was in the music video
- I genuinely knew every single thing all of them had ever starred in
- that's how bad it was on Tumblr (I wasn't even THAT excited for the movie, I don't think)
- AND THE MARKETING
- HOT TOPIC MERCH!!!
- I own two pens from this movie and I really don't know why I spent money on them
- I mean, who thinks, yeah let's slap these promo images on some pens, people will buy it
- (I mean. I did. But still.)
- I also bought the cd but let's be honest, the soundtrack still slaps, even now after 5 years
**after writing this post, I went back and watched this movie and here are some of my thoughts**

literally the blank screen with the angelic tune came up and I just made a low noise in my throat— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
still adamant that the movie cast > the show cast— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
the runes all look so fake…yikes— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
why’d they make ALL of the shadowhunters british like??? isabelle and alec grew up in new york???— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
they really just have the silent brother walk through a graveyard,,,looking like a discount death reaper,,,and sounding like they used one of those auto tune apps for his voice,,,— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
also movie magnus’s makeup is a million times better than tv show magnus’s like what did harry shum jr do to deserve that— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
I FORGOT THAT THEY MADE BACH A SHADOWHUNTER. BACH. THE FAMOUS BAROQUE COMPOSER BACH. A SHADOWHUNTER.— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
who thought this was a good costume idea? who thought, how do I make the villain unique and even more evil? oh yes, BRAIDS— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
objectively this movie isn’t horrible and even considering it as an adaptation, it’s not horrible bc it includes so much of the book and does cut/combine some of the plot points well enough but —— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
— so much happens that the movie just feels so saturated with unnecessary events. they wanted to include so much of the book (and they did!) but it’s too much in one movie. also! they kept including word-for-word dialogue but placing them in such awkward moments —— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
— that it felt so forced and random. I still maintain that the movie cast is better than the show cast but some of the directing makes some moments SO awkward and staged (ex: the kiss scene felt so forced). we got some great cinematographically nice scenes but —— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
— some were so BAD (ex: meeting the silent brother in a graveyard; pretty much any scene with valentine, ALL of the flashbacks, etc.) and the contrast makes this movie just so weird bc I really liked some parts and yet so many were so cringey.— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
last thought: I’m glad that they didn’t continue with city of ashes bc lbr, barely anything happens in the book so the movie would be so boring or they’d add some weird ass storyline that doesn’t make any sense and make the movie even worse— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
also the soundtrack still slaps and that’s that on that— michelle || read girls of paper and fire (@magical_reads) November 24, 2018
Vampire Academy (2014)
- okay I remember that I actually liked this movie as a film and just not as an adaption but also this was almost 5 years ago so who knows
- this is where I knew Dominic Sherwood from before Shadowhunters
- Claire Foy is in here?? what??
- and they did get the age gap between Rose and Dmitri right. Which makes me hate it even more
- hmmm this soundtrack features an interesting mix of artists but I've only heard one song
- I think I've only seen like 20 minutes of this movie but I honestly forgot that it was a thing
- I remember the movie cover for the book very vividly
- idk why bc I haven't even read the book
- ;alsdjkf;kj where do I even begin??
- okay when they first announced the movie, I was still OBSESSED with this series
- so like you'd think I'd be so excited for the movie
- but then they announced the cast and I was like ehhhh
- and then I watched the movie and ugh
- I still don't think the cast was great and it made the movie so bleh to me
- don't even remember anything from the movie
- wait,,,,,,,,,did I even watch it all the way through
- I honestly cannot remember if I've watched it this is so bad
- I have seen a couple of scenes from Insurgent and it was so cringey omg
- hey remember how they released Allegiant and did little to no promo for it
- I sometimes forget it even came out
- also?? how they were splitting the book into two movies but basically covered all of the plot of the book in the first part??
- and then saying they'll do a tv series for um the second half and never mentioning it again yikes
- I'm still not entirely convinced I even watched this movie??
- also remember how Shailene and Ansel were announced for TFiOS and everyone was like, how are they playing siblings in this movie then love interests in another!!
- seriously why does no one talk abt this movie
- I've only seen maybe half of it on a movie channel but it was alright-ish
- but also I strongly disliked the book so
- Nick Robinson awwww
- okay but I was always creeped out by um evan (I couldn't even remember his name)
- and I remember seeing one of the scenes in the trailer and being seriously. creeped out by him
- oh yeah they whitewashed Ringer gross ugh (not that she was any better representation in the books)
Maximum Ride (2016)
- the fact that there was a Maximum Ride movie
- that's it that's all I have to say
- (but actually I haven't seen it)
- now I'm actually just remembering what happened in the books
- (and I don't remember much but I do remember some weird things)
- anyways
- Jenna Marbles was the executive producer???
- was this movie even released?? like even just straight-to-DVD???
actors and actresses that overlapped in a lot of these movies:
- Alex Pettyfer (Beastly, I Am Number Four)
- Jake Abel (I Am Number Four, The Host, Percy Jackson)
- Dominic Sherwood (Vampire Academy, Shadowhunters)
- Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy, Before I Fall)
- Nick Robinson (The Fifth Wave; Everything, Everything; Love, Simon)
- Chloe Grace Moretz (If I Stay, The Fifth Wave, The Miseducation of Cameron Post)
- Shailene Woodley (The Spectacular Now, Divergent, The Fault in Our Stars)

Have you seen any of these? Do you have any cringey memories you'd like to share (i.e. I went to the premiere for The Hunger Games lowkey dressed like Katniss because...I don't even know why...so embarrassing)? Any other YA adaptations you want to talk about? Comment below!
Oh my goodness all of these were terrible. But also on this list: Percy Jackson and the olympians: The Lightning Thief. Yikes. Like legit terrible adaptation. it doesn't even exist tbh. Only goodpart was logan Lerman playing Percy. And even that... Percy was supposed to be 11 but whatever. It's fine. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteAHHHHHH I was going to put Sea of Monsters on here I can't believe I forgot, hang on let me edit this really fast
